New storm names for year will include Florence and Franklin, typically sent in tandem with the forecast for the most active six months of the year
Godzilla, cyclone Katrina and Hurricane Sandy are names that are attached to hurricanes because they’re brutal and memorable.
But Hurricane Florence, Hurricane Franklin, and what many will remember as Katrina will not be the names to appear on the list for next year’s Atlantic hurricane season.
The US government on Wednesday released the proposed storm names for the 21st season, which will begin on 1 June and last until 6 November 2021.

A number of previously-used names are being dropped from next year’s list, including hurricanes Harvey, Irma, Maria, Nate and Michael, because they were too close together in time or left the season with too many casualties, according to NOAA’s press release.
A new list of names will have five in all, called on in the middle of the season to follow strong storms. The Atlantic’s third name will follow Hurricane Gert at the end of June, and the fourth will take place in the middle of August.
Names will be released during two separate phases, first on Tuesday for storms between 1 June and 30 May, and then in mid-October for storms from 30 May through November.
