Prepare for rough weather ahead in southern Ontario

A dangerous thunderstorm watch remains in effect for parts of northern Ontario and the GTA into Tuesday night.

Winds will strengthen throughout Tuesday, increasing visibility and bringing winds gusting as high as 70 km/h (43 mph) to some areas, from Sunday afternoon and evening.

As wind speeds increase, isolated tornadoes may develop in a few cases, according to the Guardian.

Rainfall will also increase during the day on Tuesday, and rain could be heavy enough to cause localized flooding, creating a worse water situation than last week’s storms, the Telegraph.

Flash flood warnings remain in effect for parts of southern Ontario and the Niagara region.

Several areas of Ontario did not receive any rainfall from last week’s rain.

Dozens of flights departing and arriving from Toronto’s Pearson International Airport were delayed throughout Monday afternoon.

Minor street flooding was also reported on Monday.

Up to 50 mm (2 inches) of rain is expected to fall in Toronto and an additional 10 mm (0.4 inch) in the rest of southern Ontario through Wednesday night.

The rain will decrease early on Thursday, and the temperatures will reach 20 C (68 F) and 15 C (59 F) on Thursday, said Environment Canada.

Rain and thunderstorms are expected to return to southern Ontario through Thursday, and the same conditions will continue Friday, but at a more localized rate.
