Daniil Medvedev honoured to play in US Open in 2021 after beating Roger Federer

American tennis playerDaniil Medvedev has revealed he has been invited to play in the United States Open in New York in 2021.

It was a moment on court that only one man in history had ever experienced: hold his own match

The 19-year-old is preparing to represent Russia at the upcoming Championships in Montreal, after reaching the last 32 of the US Open last year. The world No34 holds a string of tournament wins under his belt this season.

“I feel great,” Medvedev told the New York Times of his upcoming competition at the ATP Challenger Tour event. “I’m really excited.”

US Open officials said they decided to invite Medvedev to play in the Open after discovering the Russia’s world No44 was one of the next generation of players ready to break into the top 100.

The 21-year-old Roger Federer is the only player in the Open era to have made more appearances in the tournament’s history – 73 appearances between 2005 and 2016.

Medvedev will compete at the Open for the first time in Montreal, which starts next week, when he faces Austria’s Mikhail Kukushkin in the first round.

“To be told you’re going to play at a Grand Slam … and it’s your first Grand Slam, it’s pretty incredible. It’s a dream come true.”

The US Open is in Montreal from 29 August.
