China has debuted a prototype electric train at speeds of 620 kph (398 mph) – to the annoyance of some 300 travellers who got caught out.

Police were called after the train, made by China North Industries Corp, hit the speed limit at a railway station in Shandong province.

Some 300 people were affected by the scare, according to the state-run Global Times newspaper.

The accident comes a day after another train crashed into a wall near a train station in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou.

A live power line in an electrical vault led to the crash, which left one person injured.

Pictures from the scene showed a covered train carriage sitting next to the wall of the electric vault.

Train safety has long been a source of controversy in China, which has more than 80,000 kilometres (50,000 miles) of rail network.

Earlier this year, China’s central government made railways a priority of its economic reform, under the slogan “Railways China’s Achilles’ heel”

In 2015, an accident between a high-speed train and a cargo train killed 40 people in the capital, Beijing.

Officials at the China Railway Corporation, which oversees shipper CSR Corp and other firms, have said the accident would not affect new high-speed projects.
