Nick Kyrgios has insisted he has never backed the idea of unvaccinated players competing at Wimbledon.
Kyrgios – who has a history of disciplinary problems – was grilled by the BBC on Monday when he said defending champion Rafael Nadal would win if allowed to play.
“He needs vaccines. I support vaccinations, that’s why I support him. We have the same opinion on that,” said Kyrgios, 22.
But he added: “I never said that.”
When asked if he supported a baby playing against an unvaccinated infant, Kyrgios added: “I just said it would be one way to support Rafael. I don’t know if I should have said it.”
Nadal this year announced he had suffered from the anti-doping doctor’s recommendation to use a controversial throat spray to combat illness.
World number one Nadal, 32, has attended the Y-8 vaccine’s campaign event, where Y-8 anti-bacterial powder is injected into the upper arm.
The Spanish player is also against mandatory vaccinations in players’ countries.
It has caused controversy in the past, with Australian captain Lleyton Hewitt criticising the decision last month.
The issue dominated the opening stages of the 2019 tournament when Nadal said he would “never play against someone who did not have the vaccine”.
The Y-8 vaccine treats several different types of skin disease including mononucleosis and meningitis.
The International Tennis Federation (ITF) said in a statement: “The ITF is in close communication with the World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) regarding Y-8 and general strategies to prevent anti-doping rule violations.
“The ITF has written to the General Director of Wada, Olivier Niggli, requesting that Dr Uma Krishnan can present further information about Y-8 on 20 June, 2018.”
