When he first started dating this woman, David Yates was a pretty smelly person. She married him anyway. After 20 years together, they want the whole world to know just how good they are as a couple.
This impressive love story begins in Cleveland, Ohio. Back in September of 1996, Yates, a Brit who had emigrated to Cleveland with his family, was broke. As a skid-row actor and singer, he landed a few small gigs to pay his bills. One Sunday afternoon, he agreed to an audition at a music club in Cleveland, S & A Records. Paddy, a down-on-his-luck bar pianist in town looking for gigs, was hired for the night. Paddy, who a good friend of Yates’s had already named June, was kind of a story. She started out as an elementary school teacher but by the age of 12 or 13 was acting in a series of low-budget horror movies that became cult classics in Asia and Australia. As a child, her mother was a prostitute and her father was a doctor who had his own medical practice. “She was just so horrible to me in school that I went home and wrote to her Dad and asked for my money back.” Yates says. “He wrote back and said, ‘What is all this about this fake pazzo (expletive) who doesn’t even pretend to be your friend? You’re not a friend of mine.’” Fearing that she was a charlatan, she went to a psychiatrist for a session. Eventually she quit school, Yates says, “and that’s when she told me all about her life — that she had a mother with an addiction problem, an abusive father, and an estranged sister.”
